1 - 2pm | LECTURE: Embodied in Time; The Body in Christian Art by Dr Angela McCarthy BA., B.Ed., M.A., PhD, Lecturer, School of Philosophy & Theology, University of Notre Dame Australia. Christian art has, over 2000 years adapted and changed according to the culture of the time and place in which the Christians gathered and worshipped. From the influence of Greek classical to the contemporary forms of expressions today, Christians still seek to use beauty as a way of describing God's world. The human body has always been evident because of the reality of the person of Jesus Christ so tracing the development of the body in Christian art offers two things: a unique look at the development of art in Western civilization over 2000 years, and a chance to pursue the ideas of embodiment. |

11am - 12pm | WORKSHOP: The Zen Circle: Signifying nothing, but revealing everything. by Karen Kain. This ink circle is but a single brushstroke, painted from beginning to end with mindfulness, and is thought to reflect the state of consciousness of its creator. Come have a play – put a mirror to your soul today! The Asian brush is surprisingly seismographic, revealing the unconscious. Let go of thought and find your true nature. Brush practice can help our minds to go beyond the everyday world and release not only our thinking but our spiritual understanding. |

Karen Kain
Captivated by the consciously awkward grace of Zen monks painting in the Zenga tradition, Kain rounded out her performance and art degrees from Brown University and the Art Institute of Chicago with a brush painting apprenticeship with noted painter and Zen translator Kazuaki Tanahashi, culminating in a style and working method all her own. After a lengthy period of mental preparedness, Kain invents new calligraphic characters from live figure models in seconds. While she wields ancient calligraphy brushes in both hands simultaneously, her nudes themselves remain vulnerably armless, giving form to the spaces within and between each of us, addressing questions of love and coupling and our ultimate aloneness. The work is cooly advanced in the studio next, with Western art materials and digital technology. She has exhibited throughout America as well as internationally, and was selected to show at the Asian Cultural Center in New York City. Following a solo show in Perth in 2008 she moved to Australia in 2009.
